The History of Dick/Babs (so far)

Okay guys here it is…Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon through the years. Now this is just a first draft. I’ll be adding things and editing things (especially if I got something wrong). But I wanted to post what I have so far so anyone could message me to let me know if I should add something or need to fix something. I just want this to be a post that is a great source for those that might want to know more about this couple. So if anyone wants to add anything or correct something please just message me!

Okay first go HERE to learn more about Dick and Babs from the very beginning until when they start dating. I thought that recap was a great start and I didn’t want to try re-telling anything. But I am going to take over where that post left off. The only thing I want to do is introduce some stories that re-told their past as Batgirl and Robin, all of it comes from one of my all-time favorite comics, Batgirl: Year One. Basically Dick falls for Babs/Batgirl instantly but she still brushes him off because she is a few years older (think 15 and 18 as opposed to the silver age when they were more like 15 and 25) but you can see the potential between them despite Babs’ protests.

So now fast-forward to where the other article left off: Dick and Babs are officially a couple (and they are from 2000 until their first breakup in 2004). And they have some cute couple moments throughout the 4 years. Examples:

But sadly things start to go wrong. During this time, Dick was really spreading himself thin from being Nightwing and being a cop. Barbara expresses her concern continually, especially since Dick didn’t need his officer gig, but Dick doesn’t really acknowledge her concerns.

Babs also struggles with her own issues. She worries that Dick is stuck in the past with their relationship and wonders if she is good enough for Dick in her current state (which is ridiculous to a third-party perspective but makes sense for Babs to feel — she views Dick as such a great guy who deserves the best). But you can see those insecurities in this exchange:

This all leads to Nightwing #86 when she reaches a breaking point. Dick just got his arm badly injured, he was talking about the past, and (unintentionally) makes Babs feel like she couldn’t do anything

And then: the breakup. Babs points out to Dick that he is becoming obsessed like Bruce is with Gotham (even when they are fighting I love them because they know each other so damn well) and then asks him why he loves her. Dick gives her a beyond touching explanation but Babs still believes they have to end their relationship

So Dick and Babs are now broken up…but Dick has a hard time letting go. In the next issue, after a huge fire at the circus, Dick breaks down and ends up at Barbara’s apartment and falls into her arms

But Babs sticks by her decision that they are not in the right place to be dating

Even after the breakup, Dick still thinks of Babs and cares for her deeply which you can see in the following exchange. It is the aftermath of the “War Games” storyarc and Oracle’s clocktower was destroyed. So Babs just left Gotham while Dick is dealing with a character named Tarantula. Dick leaves a voicemail on Babs’ answering machine and she responds on his:

It is clear that Dick wants to win Babs back somewhere down the line which is made clear when he is talking to a girl who lives in his building that had a crush on him (she found a picture of Babs in his apartment and asked who she was)

At this point, Dick is in a pretty fragile state. He is feeling extremely guilty because he let a villain named Blockbuster die right in front of him. After some soul-searching and a talk with Bruce, Dick has a moment and decides how he wants his life to go. DC is about to go into their “Infinite Crisis” arc and before Dick goes off to fight he has a last moment with Barbara in Nightwing #117

Dick goes off and fights and gets badly injured during the crisis. He ends up in Barbara’s care and that brings us to the controversial Nightwing Annual 2 (Many people hate this issue because it shows Dick cheating on Kory with Babs). Dick and Babs try to avoid talking about the proposal until Babs says the word ‘ring’

But then Dick brings it up again to let Babs know that his proposal was sincere

During this time, Bruce asked Dick to come along with him and Tim on a soul-searching journey and Babs encourages Dick to go. She feels like Dick never got a chance to be himself (he went from Robin to Teen Titans leader to Nightwing to Officer Grayson) and gives him back the ring

Dick leaves Babs a letter with the ring on a chain and promises her that he will come back to her.

Looks like a promising time for a Dick/Babs shipper right? But then DC comes in with their “One Year Later” storyline. Dick and Babs are no longer together and we’re never really given an answer why except for this vague panel

After this nothing really happens between the two. But it’s clear they still care for each other, like in this story where Dick takes Babs skydiving for her birthday (because he knows one of the things she misses most about being Batgirl was that sense of flying when they patrolled above the city)

Then they have more interaction during Stephanie Brown’s run as Batgirl. First some fighting (Dick doesn’t approve that Babs is letting Steph be Batgirl)

Then they make up

And then some flirting

During this run, Babs gets put under a dream sequence where she imagines being with Dick which makes it clear she still thinks about him

And now this pretty much bring us to DC’s latest reboot “The New 52.” Dick is back to being Nightwing and started seeing some girl from his circus days named Raya. Babs was given the ability to walk again so she is back to her Batgirl role. The two had some flirting in Batgirl #3

During this arc, Babs feels the need to prove herself since she just returned to the Batgirl persona. So when Dick expresses his concerns, she turns on him and they start to fight until Dick tells her to stop

Babs brushes off Dick’s help saying she needs to fight on her own. But then in Nightwing #4 she comes by to apologize and they end the issue parting on good terms
